At Common Thread Interiors, we know that the pretty little details make all the difference—and few things have as much power as a well-chosen pillow. Whether you’re tying together an entire room, introducing an unexpected pop of color or texture, or simply adding a layer of comfort, pillows can be the finishing touch that elevates your space.
Why Pillows Matter:
Pillows are much more than just accessories. They have the ability to transform a room, softening hard edges, bringing in bold or subtle patterns, and creating a sense of warmth. Whether your space needs a dose of personality or a touch of luxury, custom pillows provide the perfect opportunity to make a statement.
Here’s why we love using pillows to complete a design:
- Tying the Space Together: Pillows can unite colors, patterns, and textures already present in your space, bringing a cohesive, polished look.
- Unexpected Pops: Want to add personality without going overboard? Pillows are an excellent way to introduce a pop of color, pattern, or texture that feels fresh without overwhelming.
- Enhanced Comfort: Beyond aesthetics, custom pillows are an opportunity to increase the comfort of your space. Soft fabrics and plush inserts can make any seat or sofa more inviting.
Our Process of Creating Custom Pillows
We work closely with our trusted workroom to craft pillows that meet our clients’ unique needs and visions. Every pillow is a collaboration, starting with the selection of fabrics that reflect the style and feel of the space. We consider everything from size and shape to the trim and inserts.
Here’s a glimpse into the decisions that go into each custom pillow:
- Fabric Selection:
- Bold prints, delicate textures, and luxurious fabrics all offer something different. Whether you’re looking to match a sofa or introduce contrast, we work with high-quality textiles to ensure each pillow is both beautiful and durable.
- Size and Shape:
- From large square pillows to small lumbar designs, the right size can make all the difference in comfort and visual balance.
- Pillow Inserts & Construction:
- We never overlook the comfort factor. We use a high quality down blend in all of our custom pillows inserts. Down allows for that perfect “karate chop” look. All of our custom pillows have a zippered closure as well. This allows for our clients to easily change out a case.
Custom Pillow Construction Options:

- Best for: Pillows where you want an extra detail to define the edges and give a polished, finished look.
Fringe Pillows
- Fringe Pillows
- Description: Fringe, usually made of thread, yarn, or fabric, is sewn into the edges of the pillow, adding a textural element.
- Look: Bohemian, eclectic, or luxurious, depending on the type of fringe used.
- Best for: Adding a playful or luxurious touch to pillows in casual or opulent spaces.
Button-Tufted Pillows
- Button-Tufted Pillows
- Description: Buttons are sewn through the pillow at regular intervals, creating a tufted look with small indentations on the surface.
- Look: Classic, luxurious, and textured; perfect for vintage, traditional, or glam spaces.
- Best for: Decorative pillows on sofas or chairs where a plush, textured appearance is desired.
Appliqué or Embroidered Pillows

- Look: Ornate, detailed, and highly decorative.
- Best for: Accent pillows that are meant to serve as the focal point of the room.
- Each of these construction styles offers a different feel, from sleek and minimalist to rich and ornate, and they can be combined with various fabrics and patterns to create truly custom designs.
